Aquaprase is a newly discovered bluish green Chalcedony originating from Africa. This gemstone is translucent, vibrant green blue and different from any other known African Chalcedony. It is thought the color of Aquaprase may be caused by chromium and nickel, and some rough stones contain small vugs and cavities filled with colorless drusy Quartz crystals. Most cabochons display dark brown or black metal oxide inclusions scattered through them with the addition of white, cloudy regions. GIA describes Aquaprase as, “easily recognized by its unique composition and absorption spectrum, which is significantly different from the chrysoprase and Gem Silica varieties.”
On the Market
Aquaprase has captured the interest of gem cutters and jewelry designers and since being introduced in 2014, and is becoming more readily available as rough material, cut cabochons and set in finished jewelry pieces. Because of the inclusions, it can be difficult to cut but the desirable color and patterning make it a sought-after material that is growing in popularity. Clear stones without matrix are rarer, more costly and can often resemble Gem Silica.
Enhancement and Treatment
To date, the limited amount of Aquaprase available on the market has not been enhanced or treated.
This new gemstone is thought to have metaphysical properties related to the throat chakra, which is represented by blue. Because it is a Chalcedony, Aquaprase shares the properties of this material, which has energy that will inspire generosity, kindness and friendliness, as Chalcedony is thought to motivate the wearer to perform good deeds. Use Aquaprase to tune in to communication, meditation and impactful speech and the stone will encourage awareness of the breath.
Aquaprase in Jewelry
Aquaprase can be translucent with clear color or included with streaks of black, brick red and veils of white. Chalcedony is generally a tough gemstone, good for all jewelry applications and it is usually cabbed or carved. Cabochons take a high polish, and stones are somewhat durable and suitable for pendants, earrings and necklaces. This relatively new material should be cared for like other chalcedony by cleaning in mild detergent and warm water with a soft brush.
